If somebody calls or emails you if you know any good video converter, and you have some evil inside you, then just naturally refer your friend the SUPER © video encoder, like nothing is easier to use. Tell him that "just go to the website and you are ready to go, cheers."
In fact, even downloading the software causes trouble. Give it a shot, click the link above, and try to download it. Stat a stopwatch. Finding the link to the exe file under 2 minutes is a good job. Now go to firefox.com and you will see how it should be done.
Don't get me wrong, SUPER © does it's job properly and it's very good at concerting. But the during the road you get there you want to cut your neck with a rusty knife.
After you successfully downloaded the exe file, comes the installation. If you are used to the typical next -> next -> next -> finish type of installation then you will be very satisfied, because it's the same. A good point to eRightSoft.
After installing, pops up this:
it looks like a moular synthesizer to me.
To make this post sense, I created some wireframes on how should it look like to make it usable.
Concept: a converter should work like a meat grinder. You put in something, then you get the same thing in a different format. It shouldn't be more complicated. If the defaults don't fit you you can replace the blades or the filter later.
The first wireframe shows the opening screen with two steps.
It is clear where to start and what would you get. All the details are hidden in a configuration panel that pops up, when you click on the "change settings" text. The thumbnail image on the left should show the original screen ratio, and on the right the user should see what would happen to the video with the selected settings. It's easy to mess up the resolution ratios if you are unexperienced. Starting the conversion should be also a simple task, a big button always does the job as long as there is one big button on the interface.
The second wireframe shows how should the program communicate with the user after the process is started.
I forgot to put on a cancel text link, but it is also important to cancel the process easily.
I won't dig into the feature sets and how they should be implemented, I just want to point to that you don't have to be a top class interface designer to create something simple, all you need is just some common sense and observe how things work in real life.
